Creating an SOP draft manually, from a template or with AI

Start a new SOP, policy or document by hand, from your template, or let AI draft it in the background from reference files, studies and package inserts.

To start a document, open "Document control", then "Document drafts". Click "Create draft" and choose the kind of document: "SOP", "Policy" or "Other document". Then choose "Use AI to help" or "Create manually".

The draft form

The form asks for:

  • a "Title" (required)
  • a "Document workflow", asked only when more than one workflow could govern the document (see Approval workflows)
  • the site groups and subspecialty, which set who the document is for
  • for SOPs, the "Applicable analytes", an "Experiment" (a completed validation study) and a "Package insert", all optional
  • categories and a template, both optional

If you are not able to draft for a scope, the form tells you. A Primary Site Administrator can attach a document workflow that lets you.

Starting from a template

A template sets the structure, header and footer of a document. Text that a template marks as locked (shown in orange while drafting) is kept exactly as written, and the AI never changes it. You can find templates under "Document templates".

Drafting with AI

After choosing "Use AI to help", add any "Additional comments" and up to five "Reference files" (PDFs, including scanned pages, such as a package insert or an existing procedure), then click "Start with AI".

The draft opens straight away and Legion Diagnostics writes it in the background. Each section shows that it is being drafted, and sections fill in from top to bottom. You can leave the page while it works, and a notification tells you when the document is ready to review. A section the sources do not cover says so, rather than inventing content. You can edit the draft once drafting finishes.

AI drafting needs AI turned on for your organization and permission for the assistant to write documents. Some requests start with a short conversation in the assistant, for example when the AI is asked to choose the site group from a reference file, or when a linked study's results differ from the package insert (see Generating an SOP from a validation study).

Creating manually

Choose "Create manually" to open an empty draft, or the chosen template, in the document editor.
